View Of The Acropolis From Hotel Grande Bretagne Athens

Hotel Review: Hotel Grande Bretagne Athens

The Hotel Grande Bretagne, is a local landmark situated in the very heart of Athens with spectacular views of the Acropolis.  The property was built in 1862, and has hosted politicians, diplomats, famous movie stars and VIPs from all over the world. Therefore, it was only fitting that we stay here during our visit to Athens.

The House of Parliament is just steps away; across Constitution (Syntagma) Square. This is where you can watch the changing of the guards every hour on the hour. The Acropolis, museums, cafes, restaurants, exclusive shops and the business district are an easy walk away. The prestigious Hotel Grande Bretagne is part of Marriott International’s “The Luxury Collection” brand.

The hotel underwent an 82 million Euro restoration which meant reconstructing the hotel from top to bottom. All 290 rooms and 31 suites were newly refurbished, and redecorated in keeping with the old Grande Bretagne’s traditional style. At time of booking

Since our trip was planned through Exotik Traveler everything was taken care of by the founder Carmen. If you aren’t booking through a travel consultant you can do so on the hotel website. Carmen advised us to proceed to the Butler Reception located on the 6th floor since we got a room upgrade.

Arrival at The Hotel Grande Bretagne Athens

As soon as we pulled up to the hotel we were greeted by a porter and offered help with our luggage. The hotel is in a busy area, it can get quite chaotic as taxis try to find a spot. Yet, you still feel like you are entering a five-star luxury hotel as you make your way through the lobby. The décor can be described as opulent charming old-world elegance and the attention to detail is evident. We proceeded directly to the Butler Reception as instructed to begin our check-in process.

Check -In Process

We entered the small Butler Reception area and commenced our check-in process while sipping on champagne. So far, no complaints! When booking I always include my membership number to ensure I get the loyalty program perks which include room upgrades and more. Prior to our to our arrival we were told to expect an upgrade. We had originally booked a Deluxe Room. Once our check-in complete, we were escorted to our room.

We were not impressed with our “upgrade”. While we were upgraded to the Butler Floor it was in the same room type. My husband and I couldn’t care less about the Butler services, the room is much more important. Hence, I made my way back to the Butler Reception to express my disappointment but was told that’s the only room available. Finally, I sent an email to Carmen, Exotik Traveler, to explain the situation and she contacted the hotel. Not too long after we got a call informing us that they had a Deluxe Suite on the 5th floor. The room did not have a balcony or a view but was much nicer and almost double in size. Since we don’t sit by the window or spend time on a balcony to admire the scenery in city hotels, it suited us just fine.

Deluxe Suite Details

Master Ensuite – The Bathroom is adorned with marble, features double vanity counters, separate bathtub, and a NOT so large shower. I consider myself petite and felt a little confined in the shower. It was not proportional to the rest of the bathroom.

Noise Levels – Since the room was in the interior part of the hotel with a courtyard view it was very quiet. The air-conditioned was not a bother either.

Bed – A comfortable king-sized Luxury Collection beds topped off with multiple pillows and cloud-soft duvets made for a good night’s sleep.

Closet Space – His and hers closets are found at the entrance with enough room to hang your items.

WIFI – Strong WIFI which is complimentary if you are an SPG or Marriott Gold or Platinum member.

Water Bottles – Replenished every day by your nightstand.

Slippers and Bathrobe – These are provided for both guests.

AmenitiesGilchrist & Soames bath products like body lotion, shampoo, conditioner, body wash and soap bars are provided.

Breakfast

Breakfast was included in our stay and served in the Grande Bretagne Roof Garden Bar-Restaurant. The airy rooftop restaurant offers unsurpassed views of the Acropolis and the Kalimarmaro Stadium - the first stadium to host the Olympic Games.

We had a choice between the a la carte menu or the buffet. The American Breakfast Buffet offers a selection of cold and hot dishes, fresh pastries from the hotel’s bakery, fresh-squeezed juices and a wide selection of teas and fresh-brewed coffee. Since we are not fans of buffets we opted for the a la carte menu. It included a wide selection of breakfast items for all tastes.

Spa

We usually book a spa treatment when traveling and this time was no different. After a long day of sightseeing and Athens heat why not indulge in a little pampering in the award-winning spa. I decided to try the Slimness Massage by Valmont (75min) and the hubby the ESPA Hot Stone Massage (70min). The spa area includes the hotel gym, a hair salon, an indoor pool and rejuvenation areas offering sauna, water massage, thermal suites and a hammam.

Dining at The Grande Bretagne Roof Garden Bar-Restaurant

We made dinner reservations at the Grande Bretagne Roof Garden Bar-Restaurant one evening and the food is exquisite! Not only do you get a view of the glittering cityscape as a backdrop but you will also experience a delectable meal. Executive Chef Asterios Koustoudis does not disappoint. The Orzo pasta with lobster is a must! After dinner make your way down to Alexander's Bar and cigar lounge.

Value For Money

The location is perfect, the restaurant options are worthwhile, the rooms are lavish and the service is excellent. Hotel Grande Bretagne is your best option if you are looking for a luxury stay in Athens.

Value for Money – Rating 8/10

Concierge Service/Guest Relations

Since we did not get off to a very good start with our first room allocation I must give a lower score for this section. It isn’t the first time that Marriott/SPG disappoints with upgrades, it seems they never have a better room until I complain. I would rather avoid this in the future and get a good room from the start.

Concierge Service/Guest Relations – Rating 7/10

Overall Experience

In conclusion, we had a lovely experience at this hotel and would recommend it to anyone visiting Athens.
