Food is such an integral part of travelling for us and booking restaurants months in advance is considered normal. I spend hours researching and reading reviews to make sure we don't end up at a bad restaurant. Some of the reputable lists we refer to include: The Michelin Guide, The World’s 50 Best Restaurants, Elite Traveler and many more. Life is too short to risk a bad meal! My search was a long one, I wanted to make sure we wouldn’t end up in the touristy spots. If you want to know where to eat in Santorini look no further than the Santorini Restaurant Guide By A Foodie! The restaurants are in order of preference so if you don’t have time for all of them I recommend starting from the top.
Catch Bar Restaurant
This was one of our favorite restaurants in Santorini. The menu at Catch Bar Restaurant consists of traditional comfort-food classics centered around Greek and Mediterranean cuisine. The restaurant is on two floors, the upstairs offers open air seating and the main floor has an open roof concept. The menu is slightly different on each floor, the sushi menu is only available on the main floor. We asked to be seated upstairs and then moved to the main floor because we were missing out on the live music. You can see their list of events on their website. We are sushi snobs and are very hard to please, Catch surprised us and we were more than pleased with the sushi and sashimi selection we ordered. As a result, this restaurant is fit for foodies! The Athenian House
The Athenian House focuses on Athenian gastronomy, the regional ingredients used are sourced from all around Greece. Chef Dimitris Skarmoutsos takes you on a gastronomical journey throughout different regions of Greece. We opted for the degustation menu where you have the choice between the Chef’s Signature Meat Dishes, Signature Seafood Dishes or For Extra Virgin Olive Oil Lovers. I decided on the Chef’s Signature Seafood Dishes with the wine pairing, the hero dish was the slow cooked octopus. Carl chose the Chef’s Signature Meat dishes also with the wine pairing which I ended up drinking. The meat dishes won in terms of flavours. Seems like he always makes the better choices when dinning out! This restaurant is located in Imerovigli, get directions here. Be sure to check at what time the sunsets and get a table at the edge, it’s breathtaking!
Melitini Oia
Melitini is a great lunch spot that serves traditional Greek tapas in Oia. This lovely restaurant is run by a former banker and his childhood friend who left Athens after the crisis. They only serve Greek products; the meze dishes are delicious! They prepare family recipes that have been handed down from generation to generation. Most noteworthy: Ntakos, Saganaki (because fried cheese is always a good idea) and of course the olives. Also, be sure to check what time the kitchen opens and call ahead of time to make a reservation. You can also arrive before they open as we did and if you’re lucky you’ll get a table. Argo Fira
Argo is in the heart of Fira town, it boasts great views of the caldera and the sunset is spectacular! The menu is centered around seafood, Mediterranean flavours and some international touches. The Shrimp Saganaki, an Argo’s special dish, was the highlight of our meal. Get directions here.
Dimitris Ammoudi Taverna
Located in Ammoudi Bay in Oia, Dimitris Ammoudi Taverna serves fish and seafood dishes. The restaurant offers diners a view of the sea in a relaxed setting. Come early to enjoy the sunset or enjoy the sunset from Santorini Sunset View before making your way down to the bay. The seafood arrives daily from local fishermen and other ingredients are selected daily from the local market. Get directions here (scroll all the way to the bottom of the page).
Taverna Kallisti
Another lovely lunch spot is Taverna Kallisti in Pyrgos. This cute little taverna is as authentic as it gets and the perfect place to try local dishes like the grilled eggplants and fried tomato patties. The owner of the restaurant takes your order, fills your drinks and brings you your food. A real family run business! Get directions here.
