9 Things To Do On Zakynthos Island

Greece has been on my list of destinations for quite some time. Like many Canadians with immigrant parents, myself included, my childhood friend is of Greek origin with family in Zakynthos. As soon as she booked her summer vacation she asked if I could meet her. And since I never pass up an opportunity to travel I didn’t hesitate! Zakynthos is a Greek island in the Ionian Sea, very popular during the summer months. Some may say that it has become too touristy but don’t all beautiful places once discovered? Here are 9 things to do on Zakynthos island.

Rejuvenate Xigia Sulphur And Collagen Spa

I’ve been to hot springs but had no idea sulphur beaches existed! The turquoise waters surrounded by cliffs are simply breathtaking. Be prepared to walk down a long stairway and steep hill to reach the beach. The way back up is quite challenging, I’m not going to lie, I struggled a little. The natural spring water that flows into the sea is rich in collagen and sulphur. There are many health benefits attributed to sulphur. It is said to help with a variety of skin conditions like acne, eczema, dandruff. It also helps with arthritis, softens skin and is anti-ageing. All these benefits make up for the unpleasant smell of rancid eggs. There aren’t many beds available to rent and it can get quite crowded.

Rent A Yacht And Tour The Island

The best way to see an island is at sea! I decided to rent a yacht and it was the highlight of the trip. What a wonderful way to enjoy Zakynthos! The Lesante Luxury Hotel & Spa organised a 7 hours chartered tour with Zakynthos Private Yachting on my behalf. We had to postpone the excursion until the following day and were unable to visit the eastern side of the island due to bad weather. The sailing forecast can change from the time you book so things may not go to plan. Nonetheless, we had a fabulous time swimming next to caves and enjoyed beaches along the way.

Dock Your Yacht At St. Nicholas Beach

One of the perks of renting a yacht is docking at nearby beaches. This fine sand beach is easy on your feet, so if you hate pebbles, like myself, this is for you! There are plenty of activities; paragliding, jet skiing, there is even a scuba diving school. The beach is adorned with palm umbrellas so you can take shelter from the sun. There are also restaurants and bars where you can order cocktails or enjoy a meal.

Take A Stroll In Zakynthos Town

The harbour comes to life at night, there are several restaurants along the main road and tourist shops. A major earthquake destroyed most of the area which included elegant mansions and neoclassical buildings. Now only a few traditional buildings and churches remain.

Have Lunch At Taverna Cross

Local wine and Zakynthian country cooking is what you’ll find at this picturesque restaurant. Taverna Cross is located on a hilltop right on the edge of cliffs and surrounded by deep blue waters. The views are breathtaking, the food is delicious and the local wine is worth trying!

Watch The Sunset at Porto Roxa Beach

Porto Roxa beach is in a small bay near Limnionas and the village of Agios Leon. I personally wouldn’t choose this location to go swimming. It is very rocky and you must follow a steep path down to the water edge, there also aren’t many facilities so you need to pack a little more. Not for me! That said, the sunset is perfection! Take a seat on one of the many beds available and enjoy the sun’s magnificent performance.

Visit Marathonisi ‘Turtle’ Island

You can get to Marathonisi Island by renting a private boat or join one of the many daily organised boat trips. We didn’t spot any turtles on our visit but got to enjoy the beautiful white sandy beach and turquoise waters. Marathonisi Island is a major nesting ground of the Caretta Caretta Turtles (loggerhead sea turtles). The island is protected by the National Marine park of Zakynthos. For this reason, there are no sunbeds, restaurants, snack bars and the beach must be emptied at sunset. This allow the turtles to approach to lay their eggs. But don’t fret, there are picnic boats serving snacks throughout the day or if you have your own private boat be sure to pack some food and drinks!

Eat Dinner At Komis Fish Taverna

There is nothing better than fresh daily caught fish by local fishermen and locally sourced seasonal products. Komis Fish Taverna serves just that in a warm and inviting setting. Located in Zakynthos town, at the port, you get to enjoy a fabulous meal while sitting right by the sea. Highly recommended!
